with holes for eyes black as night.
I had succeeded but my moment of pride lasted only a couple seconds before the beast turned its gaze towards me and began to charge. I don't know why but I panicked. I was trained in the event a spirit turns like this but for some reason I couldn't recall the proper spell. Just the site of this spirit turning reminded me so much... of before.
No, no, no, why is this happening? I had to think quickly so I sheathed my orb
and frantically rustled through my spellbook. The heat from the spirit was so
intense I could barely see the words on the pages through the sweat poring off
my brow.
Then I heard what sounded like a stampede approaching at a furious speed
coming from behind me. I looked up from my spellbook just in time to see a
glowing streak of green rushing at the fire spirit. It was Neutares, a very close
friend of mine who has fought and grown with me ever since we ascended together.
In an instant he came to a stop and with a thundering roar lept into the air grabbing his
massive polearm off his back and came down with a powerful overhead swing. His weapon
collided with the spirit with such force the ground cracked underneath and the spirit was knocked onto its back, crippled by the powerful blow.
"Quickly Ozamet! While it's down!”
I extended both hands in front of me and shouted,“Vil haruam!”.
A gust of wind surged forward from my palms making short work of the weakened spirit.
"I could've controlled it, Neutares. Why did you interfere?"
"Perhaps I should've left you with your new pet and just swept up the
ashes afterwards?”, he snapped back with an intimidating tone.
“I'm sorry, my pride was hurt, that's all. I don't understand what it is about
the spirits of fire that gives them such rage.”, I said as I turned my hand
over, a small flame appearing in my palm. “I can control the fire in its
current state so why can I not tame the spirit?”
“The real question is why bother with fire when you can wield a trusty metal
like orichalcum. I've yet to fight a Balaur or Elyos that could stay on
its feet against ol' Susy!”, he replied with a deep chuckle.
“Come, we will be late delivering our daily reports to Suthran.”
As we flew towards Morheim I began to dwell on my failure to control the fire
spirit. There hasn't been a successful spirit fusion since the cataclysm.
'I need to do this, he would want me to do this. I can't freeze like that again.', I thought to myself.
“Let it go, Oz. You can't rush it. You of all people know how dangerous
these rituals can be.” he said, noticing the expression on my face.
“I shouldn't have let him do it, Nu. I shouldn't have pushed him so hard
but he just seemed so confident! Damn it, I thought he was ready!”
'Eventor... I'm sorry...'
